Free Food!

Do you know what's growing in the picture above? Believe it or not, it's rice! Most of us have never         seen it growing in fields, or rice paddies.

How often do you think about rice? Probably not often!

Rice is a highly produced crop throughout the world, second only to corn. Since corn is mostly grown for purposes other than human consumption, rice is the most important grain for human consumption.
There are more than 40,000 varieties of rice that grow on every continent except on AntarcticaAsia, where about 90% of rice is grown, has more than 200 million rice farms.
There is enough rice grown in Arkansas, California, Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi and Missouri to rank the USA as the twentieth largest rice producer in the world and the second largest exporter of rice. About half of all the rice grown in the USA is exported.

This month you will be reading a lot about rice in preparation for our Curriculum Fair in April. So rather than have a reading assignment here this month, I am giving you a different challenge. You will have an opportunity to practice your skills in vocabulary, math or geography, as well as providing food for people living in poverty.
Rice is the most important food crop of the developing world and the staple food of more than half of the world's population. Worldwide, more than 3.5 billion people depend on rice for more than 20% of their daily calories. Even though so much of it is produced, it still costs more than many people can afford. For this reason, I'd like to introduce you to a website called Freerice.
Freerice was founded in October 2007 by John Breen, as a way to help his son prepare to take the SAT tests for college admission, and also to help erradicate world hunger.  In March 2009 Mr. Breen donated the site to the UN World Food Programme. In making the donation, Mr. Breen expressed his hopes that Freerice will be able to grow over the coming years, helping to feed and educate as many people as possible throughout the world. When you play, you can actually see the amount of rice you are donating.
So, this month, spend some time playing the games on Freerice.com. Try different subjects and different levels. Play for at least 30 minutes, and then report on what you played and how much rice you earned. This is information from the site:

About Freerice.com
Freerice is a non-profit website that is owned by and supports the United Nations World Food Programme.
Freerice has two goals:
  • Provide education to everyone for free.
  • Help end world hunger by providing rice to hungry people for free.
This is made possible by the generosity of the sponsors who advertise on the site.
Whether you are CEO of a large corporation or a street child in a poor country, improving your education can improve your life. It is a great investment in yourself.
Perhaps even greater is the investment your donated rice makes in hungry human beings, enabling them to function and be productive. Somewhere in the world, a person is eating rice that you helped provide.

  1. I had a good time playing this game and I thought the site was pretty cool, because depending on what points you got, you gave starving people rice. I reached Level 15 in English vocab, English grammar didn't go as well. The multiplication facts were helpful. I finished with a score of a solid 1000 grains of rice

    1. You didn't say what you played or how much rice you earned. I don't think a person has to count the rice! The computer adds it up and then they must measure it by weight, sort of the way Helena figured out how much a cup is, but on a larger scale.

I really liked playing the game and it's a very fun way to learn new vocabulary, practice math skills, and many other fun things. I think that this was a really good assignment for you to give. I even saw some of our vocabulary words! For example disperse and metaphor. I got to about 2,000 and had a lot of fun!

I played on Freerice.com for about 30 mins. and it was great! I did subjects like grammar, human anatomy, Italian language, Indentifying countries on a map, vocb, and plenty more! I came to a total of 1,030 grains of rice! I thought that playing on Freerice.com really helped me a lot with learning, and whenever I got a question right, I felt good about myself, not only because I got it right, because I just gave 10 more grains of rice to someone who rightfully deserves it.

  61. Mrs. Grey and I played the Spanish game and we earned 3,000 grains of rice before success block ended. I also learned the "aquagua" meant water balloon or water gun. That one took about 15 minutes to get but if you think about it, it makes a lot of sense. "Aqua" means water it a lot of latin-root languages so "aquagua" must mean water-something right? After playing the game so long, I forgot we we're doing something to benefit others in need. I learn what "aquagua" means and a staving child gets a yummy bowl of rice. It's a win-win.

  63. I played the game several times this month trying to earn up a lot of rice for people in need. I played with my mom, I played by my self a lot, I even played with my moms boss. The point is I played a lot I earned over 8,000 grains of rice. I think it tied in really well with the Curriculum Fair and showed us how to help other people. I think we should do more blogs think this one.

  64. This game is addicting and fun and it is for a good cause. I thought the rice can't really be free though. I asked my mom and I guess the adds in the bottom are the companies who pay for the rice. I think that's a pretty cool idea.

    1. Yes, the companies buy the rice in exchange for the advertising space. Isn't that brilliant?
How much rice did you earn?

  67. I played Freerice.com for about around... an hour maybe.I played on the French setting which I chose because my last name and my grandfathers mother was French, so I checked out this setting to see if that heritage had effect on me. Well I must say I was surprised to find I had only donated 80 grains of rice!!! It would have felt better if I made more rice to provide to poverty, but I vowed that I will keep returning to this web site again and again until I complete my goal of donating 2,000 grains of rice.

  72. This month on freerice.com, I played about two times over the course of the month and have donated 2,500 grains of rice. I have earned rice by answering questions in English Vocabulary, English Grammar, Multiplication Table, Basic Math (Pre-Algebra), and Spanish. I lost track of what level I was on for each of them, but I did play for about 45 - 50 minutes this month. It feels good knowing that somewhere out there, my efforts are helping somebody have food to eat.

  74. I played multiplaction table and earned over 1000 grains of rice. I like how this months blog let us play a game not read because it gave an easier job. I'm glad we got to play a game and then it gave rice to the starving. It feels good our team got to give rice to the starving. Sorry i blogged so late in the month i'm working a lot on the rice project and it is harder then I thought. Josh b
