Oh, The Places You'll Go! and How to Find Your Way Once You Get There.

If you're thinking of travelling, it's a good idea to get yourself a map.

This month, you'll be taking a look at books with maps in them -- not necessarily atlases, but books that include maps so that the text will be easier to understand. Whether it's a book about a real place or an imaginary land, having a map to look at can make the text much more enjoyable.

Below is a list of a few books that have maps, or in which a map is an important part of the story. Some are fiction (historical or fantasy) and some are non-fiction. These are all at the Barrington Public Library and of course, the BMS Library and the classroom library have many as well. Choose whatever seems the most interesting to you. Spend some time poring over the maps to see what you can learn. Please share the book you read and what you learned with us here. You have the entire month of October to do this. Check back often to see what you're friends have read.
Oh, the things you'll learn when you read a map!

  1. I read a book called Spiderwick: The Field Guide and it had a map of a fantasy world. The map helped me understand the book.

    1. Isn't it cool that the author created a whole world and even drew a picture of it? What imagination!
So what are you going to read this month?

  2. I read a book named Windcatcher by AVI. The main character went to his grandparents and learned how to sail. The map was of the bay where he was sailing, and it helped because he was naming the islands where he was exploring. The character would say he was sailing in "Joshua Cove" for instance, and I could look at the map and see where it was to understand the story better. The story was set in Long Island Sound and I learned that there are many islands in the sound. Some of the islands are known as a group called The Thimbles.

  3. I read The Warriors series by Erin Hunter, it is a fantastic series! All the books in the series have 2 maps. one in the cats point of view, and twolegs(us)point of view. you should read it sometimes. the first book is Into The Wild.

    1. It must be really interesting to compare the two maps! I wonder what a map of the house would look like from my cat's point of view.
Have you read any of the other Erin Hunter series? Do you think the others have maps in them as well?

  4. I read a map of Gunstock. That place was so fun, I went on the zipline!!!!! But you can also go on segways. You can rock climb, there is a bike park, you can hike and fish. You can go skiing or just ride up the chair lifts. You can go on the awesome monkey trunks too!!!!The reason most people go there is to camp, and while you are camping you can do all of that stuff and swim in the pool!!!!

P.S if you have gone there before did you do the zipline or the monkey trunks?

  5. I read the map Coastal California. This is a place I would like to vist sometime. The Death Valley national monument is the lowest point in the western hemisphere because of the ranges pulling apart. Another interesting place in California is the San Andreas Fault, it is the cause of the several hundred earthquakes that happen daily. The last thing that I found interesting was the Redwoods, It has 100,000 acres of state and federal land set aside for the Redwood trees.

I would probably want to stay away from the Fault though! I would definitely want to study a map of Death Valley before going there -- not a place I'd want to get lost!!

  6. On monday, we had no school, and my family went to Fort Mclary in kittery. Most of the fort is gone now but it was pretty cool standing where people have been over 330 years ago. I picked up a map that showed what the fort looked like throughout the years. We found where two riflemen houses were, and many magazine storing places. I was amazed by the underground tunnels that had little rifle windows for shooting any enemies. If you have a day off, come and check this place out!!! :)

  7. Well, I myself am very interested in maps. I am currently reading "Physik" as after "flyte", and before "flyte" comes "magyk". In the beggining of the book, there is always a map. I study the map, and then read. Whenever my book mentions a familiar or unfamiliar place, I go back to the map to search for it. And heres an idea: If you REALLY like maps, you could tape a bunch to your walls, and pinpoint places where you want to go!

    1. Abi, I'm impressed that you study the map before you start to read the book! Most of the time I don't do that, and then I get confused by the story and have to go back to the map. It would be nice if the map was on a separate piece of paper so that you could have it out next to you while you're reading.

  8. For my map book, I read "The Scary Places Map Book." I personally read "Trip Through Transylvania." In this book, it gives you a map with latitude and longitude. It gives you directions to follow. Igor takes you on a tour of Transylvania while you see various things like the ghostly graveyard, the skeleton swamp, zombie lake, Dr. Frankenstein's Lab, and even Dracula's castle and coffin! This is a very fun book if you like books like this. try this book for your blogging book!

The book tells about the landscape and history about the mountain. One mountain I have hiked I read about how there was a plane crash and 1 person died out of the 2. I hike up the mountain to try and find the plane. In the book it said it was still there but we never found it. We still got to the top of the mountain. 53. I read the Fairytale Map Book and the map helps because it gives you a little summary of the story. It will also tell you things to find for the story with coordinates on the map. Basically the map is really the story.

  54. I read Fallen Angels by Dean Myers. I read it earlier in the month and really enjoyed it. The main character's name is Richard Perry, and he's is in the army fighting in the Vietnam war. The map really helped to understand when the main character went on patrol, and I had no idea where they were. I don't know much about where everything is in Vietnam. The map helped me to understand where the character was when certain events happened in the story, like when bombs went off and killed some of the men in his platoon.

  55. I read the map for Papoose Pond Campground to help my friend and I get around. We were able to find the arcade, fishing dock, the pond, the camp store, the swimming pool and our campsite.

I've also read the Lion, the Witch and Wardrobe and other books in the series and used the map of Narnia to help me understand where the characters were.

  58. I’m reading The Smugglers Treasure and it’s about an eleven year old girl named Elisabet. She has to go to New Orleans because there was a war going on in 1814 and her father got captured by a Brittan, near the Gulf of Mexico. Elisabet has to live with her aunt and uncle that she has never met before. Her aunt wants her to work in her bakery, but Elisabet has ever worked before because her father was a wealthy man in Boston. The map helped me locate where the Gulf of Mexico is to New Orleans.

  59. I read the Once Upon A Time Map Book, where the maps are really what make up the story! I love how the author interacted with the reader by taking them on little tours, and now I understand not only the book, but the Disney movies that they are from. Going a little off topic and saying how I love the look of the maps! I enjoy the way they are filled with color, but not overwhelming.

  64. I, as a lot of people, am reading Eragon. There is a map of the fantasy land it takes place in, the front of the book; it is very helpful. The characters move around a lot and it makes it easier to follow where they are, where they are going, and how far they have to travel to get there. It also helps you understand the story. There is also a dictionary in the back of the book of the made-up language the author created. I know that has nothing to do with the assignment but I thought it was kind of cool!

  67. This month, I read the book "Unlocking the Spell". This book is about a princess that is supposed to change her sister's husband back into a human so that he can rightfully rule with jis wife (he is a bear now). The princess herself was sent because magic does not work on her, and the king and queen thought that would be useful in this journey. The map was in the beginning of the book, and since the book's setting is a made-up land, the map was useful to look at to see where the main character is in the book, and where she has been on her adventure.

I still loved the book. It's also a good book for Halloween. Which is TODAY! Te book doesn't really have a main setting, beuase it's seven different maps. But I guess the main thing of it is scary maps.

  72. I am reading a book, Cleopatra The 7th Daughter of The Nile, for S.S. and realized it had a few maps in the back of the book so I chose to write about it for the blog also. The maps that it includes are, Ancient Egypt, the ancient city of Alexandria (Cleopatra's hometown), and the vast.. and ancient... Roman Empire. The author included the Roman Empire because Cleopatra and King Ptolemy 1 needed help to concure Egypt again because nobody liked Ptolemy anymore since he is a drunken king who rises taxes and steals money from innocent citizens, (back on topic...) so they went to Rome in search of help from the Roman army. They all show so much detail like little things as trees or bushes or ripples in the ocean or the Nile. These helped me much more understand what it may look like and how long the it may take to get to place to place. But the overall book isn't so great.
