What's Your Next Reach?

    May 13, 2013

How's this for a movie trailer?    (Read in your deepest voice)
In a world, where there are so many books, some too easy, and some too hard; One Reader seeks one that is Just Right.
Eventually this reader's quest leads him to the book that will challenge his vocabulary, his fluency, and stretch his ability to understand :
 A NEXT REACH BOOK.

YOU are the main character in this drama! I've asked you to think about what book should be your "Next Reach", and you've chosen something to work on.
This month, you'll report on what you've chosen to read as your Next Reach book. Please wait until after you have started it to write your comment.
In your comment, tell us:
1. Why is this book a "Reach" for you?
2. How is this book helping you become a better reader?

Comments must be completed by June 14.

  1. YAY! FIRST COMMENT!
Harry Potter I is a good "next reach" book for me because it is rather difficult and i've learned some new vocabulary such as ''pursed" and "walloped". It will help me moving forward because I'm new to this wizardy/
magic/mysterty genre. Also I don't normally read books this lenth. I really hope to stay interested and finish the series.

    1. This is a great challenge, Dylan! The size/length of that series can be daunting! It might help you to see the movies first, and then read the books after. I hope that you enjoy them!

My next reach is The Diamond Throne because i tried to read it before but
couldn't understand it. I'm trying to read it again and makes more sense now than it did before. That is my next reach.

  3. My next reach is Hugo Cabret!! I chose this because when i read it i felt like i read it to slow and i didnt know the pictures told a different story. i dont want to read it way to fast so that i dont know anything about it but i want to read this book a little faster and understand the pictures.

    1. Good for you, Bryce! Now that you understand about the pictures, you know that you have to read the two stories differently. Which do you think you will be able to read faster, the picture story, or the text story? It might be different than you think!
I can't wait to hear what happens!

    2. The last page in the book is in words so i will be able to finish the book in pictures then the book in words

  4. My next reach book genre is graphic novels. They are my next reach because i dont like the pictures in the books because i like to picture the writing in my head and graphic novels are hard to because they are always showing a different picture than what i am thinking in my head. I think this would make me a better reader because i would open my mind more to new things and picturing why they drew the pictures.

    1. I guess we can both learn something from reading graphic novels! I think that when you have the pictures, you have to visualize less and infer more. You have to read the characters' facial expressions carefully to see what they're thinking and feeling. They're a really great example of what it means to SHOW and not TELL! I hope that you find one that you like!

It is also helping me because I axtually need to pay attention or else I wond be able to figure out what is happening.

  6. My next reach books are Smile and Drama. I chose to read these because they are graphic novels and I have never read a graphic novel before. Also because I heard everybody saying they were the best graphic novels. I read Smile and I found out it was actually really good for a graphic novel. Graphic novels help me become a better reader because i am learning to read they story through pictures.

I usually don't choose books that size, but there have been some that I have loved - the Twilight series, and the Inkheart series. So if you enjoy it, the length won't bother you! In fact, you'll be glad that they're long! Enjoy!

  10. Alright, well, the reach I had written on a slip of paper was to finish this REALLY boring part of The Golden Compass in one sitting. Well, I decided to change it a bit. I want to finish the book before the 1st of June. It's a short time to finish a 386 page book, considering the font is, like, REALLY small, so, yup. That would be it... :)

  11. I am in the middle of reading United States of America, Mrs.Piazzi picked out it for me. I like to read, but honestly I am really picky about my "Just Right book." So I haven't read a "complete" book before. I have tried many books, Harry Potter, Magyk, and many others. I read books that I can understand and read fluently without getting lost. I like graphic novels, and such... In comparison, this book is a very good read for me and so far, I can understand everything. (This is quite an accomplishment) When I get home, I usually open my laptop and play on minecraft, (its my daily routine you may say) I totally "forget" to read. Perhaps my REACH goal is to finish this book by... June 1. Sounds reasonable. Thats all for now, I will keep you informed!

  15. Well I finish reading my next level book but it was called The On Treasure Island. It was a graphic novel and the reason beging it was a graphic novel is because i never read one. When i tried to read Zita the space girl it didn't workout at all. I could not follow the story at all. I should have known better than to think that all graphic novels are like that. Because now for this time to last thursday i read 5 graphic novels and finished. This is my favorite type of books to read now. I think my next step will be nonfiction books.

  17. Right now my next reach is called Maggie And Oliver. The reason why this book is a next reach for me is because one it is a longer read than than the book I read before it. The second reason is that this book is a little harder to understand then the last book I read. After I finish reading this book I think I am going to try to read a book that has a harder vocabulary and will be a longer and more challenging book for me. I read Baby Mouse Saves The World which was not as bad as I thought it would be but it wasn't amazing either I liked Garfield better mostly because its Garfield I mean who doesn't like him? This helped me become a better reader because it is a new experience and now I know I don't like them as much as realistic novels.

I read this one book from the kindle at the public library and I never got to finish it but I fell in love with it and can not remember the name of it for the life of me! But now I am reading the book Revive by Cat Patrick and it is about a secret medicine called revive and the main character Daisy West (well know it is West the family is constantly changing it to keep undercover) is basically a human lab rat who is very clumsy and is always accidentally killing herself so they use revive and she is once again alive. I have tried a few, such as Harriet the Spy and The Hardy Boys but I didn't really like either of them. Mysteries make you think a little more than other books in which they do not tell you everything that is going on; you have to come up with theories on your own, and the authors tend to tell you less of what's going on than authors of other genres. This will make me a better reader because it will cause me to think more about what is really happening in the book. I will have to be more involved in the book, and will have to make more inferences, therefore making me a better reader. That's my next reach, why it is a "reach" for me, and why it is making me a better reader.

I have had a few people tell me it is a great series and can be kind of challenging but all of the people who told me this are at the same reading level as me so i think it would be hard for me to. 51. For my next reach I am reading the Inkheart series. I chose this for my next reach because I usually don't like long books because there are so many books that I want to read. When I read a long book, I think of a different book that I want to read and then I loose interest in it. It will take a long time to finish and I am in a hurry to finish it so I can read another book that I am excited about. It will improve my reading skills because I will learn that even though a lifetime isn't long enough to read all the books you want, I should still give a long book a chance because it is the same as a short book, but it is more detailed and has a longer story, and takes a longer time to read, but I should still enjoy it.

My next reach is the popular and well known book, The Maze Runner. In second grade my teacher read this book aloud to the whole class each day. I remember staring at the clock waiting for her to begin reading, it was always my favorite part of the day. So two years later I began to read the book myself. I was super excited because all I had really been reading was realistic fiction and I wanted a change. But for some reason, the book was not at all what I had remembered and it was slightly... boring. At about half way through the book, I stopped reading. I did this because I noticed that I no longer liked to read, that it was more of a chore than an entertainment. So now I am trying out The Maze Runner one last time to see what was it that changed my opinion about the book. The genre? The topic?
