This month you'll be looking for a story, poem, article, or book with "SNOW" in the title, or in which snow plays an important part. (You cannot use the poem from the back of Reading Log #1.)
The word "Snow" appears in the titles of books of every genre. You can probably remember some picture books from your childhood, like Ezra Jack Keats' Snowy Day or maybe you had a copy of the wordless The Snowman.
A quick look at the library catalogue revealed these examples:

A Perfect Snow by Nora Martin (YA Fiction)
The Snow Pony by Alison Lester (YA Fiction)

and don't forget Wolf Storm (on the Great Stone Face List), which is about a blizzard and avalanche!!

I read Snow-White and the Seven Dwarfs. It is about how Snow-Whites stepmom tries to kill her because a mirror told her Snow-White was the fairest. So snow white runs away and comes to a house with seven of everything! So she eats a little and falls asleep. When the dwarfs come home they leave her there and sleep in different beds. Then they told Snow-White she can stay if she cooked and cleaned. (to be continued)

Delete(this is continued to my first comment) Then one day the step-mother came to the dwarfs house where Snow-White was home alone and the queen knocked on the door and Snow-White opened it and the queen brushed snow-whites hair with the poisoned comb and it knocked snow-white out. The queen thought she was dead so she walked home. Later the dwarfs came home and saw Snow-White laying on the ground and awoke her. Meanwhile the queen asked the mirror who was the fairest and it said snow-white was alive and she was the fairest. So the queen made a poisoned apple and brought it to the dwarfs house once again the dwarfs were not home. The queen knocked on the door and Snow-White opened it. The queen asked her if she would like an apple. Snow said no. "But what if I eat half first." The queen said. So she cut it in half and ate the red part of the apple and Snow-White ate the white. Snow-White then was killed and fell on the ground. The queen knew she was dead this time so she ran home and asked the mirror who was the fairest and it said that the queen was the fairest of them all. The dwarfs came home and saw Snow-White lying there and they also knew she was dead. So they bought a glass, golden coffin to bury her in, but before they burried her a special person came along and... (you will have to read it yourself to find out!)

DeleteI have "The Snowy day" By Ezra Jack Keats, and I used to read it all the time when I was younger. I read it again today and retraced my memory, since I haven't read it in forever. It is about this boy named Peter who loved snow. He woke up one morning and saw snow and immediately ran outside and started playing. He did everything there was to do in the snow. He made snowmen and snow angels, he climbed up and slid down tall hills, and made a snowball. Then he took it home and left it in his pocket. After he took his bath, the snowball had melted, and Peter was sad. But then the next day, new snow was all around!

DeleteI also read Snow White and the seven dwarfs. It was about a princess named Snow White who had an evil stepmother that wanted to be the fairest in the land so she asked her mirror and it said that snow white was the fairest. She commanded a huntsman to kill snow white. When he saw her, she was so beautiful he let her go and killed a pig instead. Snow White ran away and found a small house that belonged to Seven Dwarfs. She was hungry, so she ate the food put out for the dwarfs. She became tired and slept on one of their beds. When the dwarfs got home from work, they found Snow White and woke her up. They said if she did their housework, she could stay with them, and she did. When the stepmother asked her mirror, she found out that Snow White was still alive and her huntsman lied. She got so angry that she wanted to kill her again. After many failed attempts, she came up with the perfect plan. She found a recipe for a poisoned apple that was half poisoned, half apple. The princess learned from the stepmothers previous plots and answered from the window. She refused to come out of the house until she saw the disguised stepmother eat half of the apple. The stepmother ate the regular part of the apple and gave the princess the poisoned part. After she ate the part of it she dropped dead. When the dwarfs found her, they said she was too pretty to bury in the ground, so they put her in a glass coffin. After a short while, a prince came and convinced they dwarfs to give him the coffin. The prince ordered his servants to help him bring the coffin back to the castle. After the servants stumbled over a bush the shock of the stumble forced the poisoned apple and pushed it out of the princess’s mouth. She sat up and the prince asked her to be his wife. They got home to the castle, got married and lived happily ever after without the evil stepmother.

Where did you find that version, Alex? I wonder how it will be different from the version that Drew is reading. I never read one in which the stepmother made only half of the apple poisonous. How tricky!
DeleteI finished reading Winter of Red Snow and it is a really good book about this girl named abigail and she has a poor family and it is the war of Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, 1777 and they have a new brother and think he is going to die over the rest of the winter and he survives but they don't think the british will win but then the book ended

DeleteI read the book How Georgie Rundled Saved Baseball. It was about how this man named Boss Swaggert went in a terrible slump, so much so that he quit baseball and vowed to make it illegal one day. So Boss worked very hard and became a very rich man, but that slump was always in his head. After years of thinking Boss finally finshed his master plan. He gave monumental speech to giant crowds and bought all the T.V and radio stations and spoke about how baseball was an evil game and needed to be stopped. He even got all the people to believe in him. He had the president arrested for allowing baseball too. Therefore Boss was now president and he made baseball sayings illegal and that is when Spring came, it was still snowing, no baseball meant no reason for it to stop snowing. That's when Georgie came in. He was an odd boy and he would always just shout out random baseball sayings, these were of course illegal. His family had to hide them and sucessfully did until until he had to go to work. His family wrapped his face in bandages and said it was a kitchen accident. That worked for three weeks until he finally broke out of the bandages

That led to the trial of the century unil Georgie offered Boss that if he could strike him out on 3 pitches, baseball would be allowed again. They cleared a baseball field and the first pitch came in Boss swung hard and missed. The second swing Boss sent a towering fly ball...foul, 2 strikes, the final pitch came Boss swung out of his shoes and missed, THREE STRIKES! The sky cleared and Georgie was the hero.

DeleteThis month I read "Cross-Country Cat" by Mary Calhoun, illustrated by Erick Ingraham. It talks about a family who loves this cat who can walk on his hind paws, well, everybody except the dad. It was the winter and the family was at the bottom of a skiing mountain in a log cabin. The kid has an awesome idea, the cat should go skiing. The kid found some shingles that were curved at the end. He grabbed some tongs and turned the shingles and tongs, into skis. The cat decided he didn't like to ski. The cat and family soon went home after a day of skiing. The cat got all his stuff, or so he thinks. He forgot his only treasure, a purple fake mouse. He hopped out of the car and ran into the cabin to get it. When he came back out, the car was leaving. He knew they hadn't noticed. The family wasn't turning around, the dad was driving.

DeleteThe cat saw that the snow was too deep to walk on. He knew he had to get those skis he hated. So, the cat went looking for for the skis and found them in a corner. He put them on and started his journey. He ran into some other animals including a caribou, a blue jay, and a rabbit. He eventually got back to the road and saw the people coming at him. He threw off his skis and laid in the snow. When the people drove up to the cat, the dad got out and said "I guess he really is a smart cat."
Phew! I'm glad he got home! I think cats really are smart; he knew that he had to use the skiis that he hated!

DeleteI read the book The Snowman. I really enjoyed reading this book because it reminded me of when I would look through the pages as a little kid. I remember reading it under the Christmas tree. The book is about a boy who builds a snowman. In the middle of the night he finds out that the snowman has come to life. The snowman comes into his house and after that brings the boy back outside and they go on a little flying trip. Then the snowman brings him back and he goes to sleep. When the boy wakes up he finds the snowman melted on the ground. :(

Snow White's step mom was jealous of how pretty Snow white was and ordered a huntsman to kill Snow White. The huntsman felt bad for Snow White and told her to run away and never come back. Snow White ran and ran until she found a nice little house with seven small beds and stuff like that. She was so tired that she fell asleep. Soon the seven people that owned the house came back and saw Snow White sleeping peacefully on the bed. They let her sleep and she soon woke up. They told them she could stay with them. But the step mother found out that Snow White was alive and she tried to kill the pretty girl twice but each time the step mother failed. Then soon enough she killed Snow White. But some how Snow White woke up and met a prince and they lived happily ever after. as for the step mom she died and NEVER woke up :)

I read a book called Snow White. It is about this girl that has skin as white as snow, cheeks as red as blood, and hair as black as night. Her mother died and one year later her dad married a beautiful women, who had a special mirror who told her who is fairest of all. Then one day when Snow White was older the mirror said she was the fairest of all. So the step-mother ordered a huntsman to kill snow white and bring back one lung and her liver. So the huntsman did what he was told but when he tried he felt bad for Snow White so he let her free and killed a wild bore and brought back its lung and liver. Then Snow White found a small cottage and when she went in she saw a table with little plates and little knifes, forks, and spoons. She ate some food and fell asleep.When the dwarfs came back they let her sleep and when she woke up they said she could stay if she took care of the house, so she agreed. Then the queen found out she was still alive and tried to kill her 3 times, twice she failed but then on the third time she killed her, or she thought she did. When the dwarfs came back they realized Snow White was truly dead so they made a coffin, brought to a top of a hill and guarded it.Then one day a prince came and was bringing her back to his palace but one of his guards dropped the coffin and a piece of apple flew out of Snow White's throat. After that she married the prince, the step mother died and NEVER woke up and everyone lived happily ever after! :)

Also they way it repeats itself also rymes with most of the other lines. I thought that the artist used a lot of ryming techniques wich made the story sound really cool

DeleteWell, the ending certainly was a surprise! It sounds like the poet ran out of things to say and just made the first rhyme that he thought of, even though it doesn't add to the images in the poem. Can you think of a better last line?

I read " stoping by woods ion a snowy evening" by Robert Frost. i was about a man in a one horse seligh and he looked like santa clause! he did snow sngels and planted a tree. i think it was a pretty good book.

I agree with you; it is pretty repetitive. Sometimes repeating things makes a nice ryhthm, but I think this poet overdoes it!
DeleteI read First Snow. It goes through the poem like a day. First it describes how beautiful the snow in in the morning then shows how the snow sparkles in the moon light . I think it is a good poem and that it is a good romadel if you want to write this kind of poem.

DeleteI read Cross Country Cat. Its about a cat that stands on his back legs. In the story and the boy in the story wanted the cat to go cross country sking with his family. The cat didnt want to. One day they were going to head home. The cat forgot his mouse ( purple ball of yarn). The family left without him so he went to look for his skies that the boy made him. Then the cat got in the skies and pushed ahead and he started to ski. The cat got in some ttrouble on the way. Thats just a summary of the story.

I read winter war its about a boy who has a war with the brudle cold and his friends in a great big war they had meny things to chose from like snowballs snow bombs ice rock.The war got bigger and bigger new kids joined a team and quickly the war grond got bigger and bigger more snow started to fall. at night they had to sleep in a ice made house or you lose and be called a sisy then the war ended no more snow and it was time for spring

I read the article from read magazine called To The Brink. It is about two men making the first ascent of a mountain in Nepal. It was getting dark and the ice and snow was very slippery. The mans partner fell and they were roped to each other so they both ended up sliding down the slippery slope of the mountain. He ended up falling into a big ditch and had to climb out while his partner pulled him. The fall happened because his partners crampons(ice boots) had come loose. It took him two and a half years to recover from that fall.

ReplyDeleteFor this month's blog I read The Attack of the Deranged Mutant Killer Monster Snow Goons. I love and am a big fan of Calvin and Hobbes so I thought why not read this book. This is my second time reading it. There are many different short comic stripes in this book, but I'll tell you about the Snow Goons. The story is that Calvin and Hobbes make two snow men, but some how like Frosty the Snowman they both come to life. The snowmen want to kill both Calvin and Hobbes, but Hobbes throws a big snow ball at them and it kills them. Then calvin sprays them with hot water and they disolve. Oh sorry the snowman had two heads there were not two of them. By the way my mother read this book to me.

I read the book snow drop. Its a different book and its a short read, but its mostly about a flower that bloomed to late. Know has to face the winter alone i wont tell you anymore you will have to read it yourself.

DeleteI always wondered how the prince knew that he was supposed to kiss her. Did he think that she would wake up? I wouldn't recommend going around kissing dead guys! At least for her it ended Happily Ever After!

I read a very famous poem by Robert Frost called Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening. I liked it, and I liked the rhyming in it. I thought it was used creatively. Also there's a very famous line at the end, "And miles to go before sleep, And miles to go before I sleep." That is one of my favorite lines because it sounds mysterious.
ReplyDeleteI also read a short story by O Henry called The Snow Man. I thought it was quite interesting, and it had a funny ending. These men come and stay at this ranch house with a cook because there is a snow storm. The snowstorm was a blizzard that lasted for days. Then a lady comes and they all try to marry her. But finally the cook, who hardly says anything during the snowstorm, tells them that he is going to take this woman into town because they're all going crazy. But later, he writes a note saying he quits his job as the cook and has married her. I liked it a lot and it was very unpredictable, which I loved. The best part was when you found out that the cook's last name is Snow.

In a reading block last week I read cross country cat. It does not have the word "snow" in the title, but snow plays a huge role in it. The cat's owner makes hima pair of skis, and when the family accidentally leaves him behind at their winter getaway,he straps on his skis, and makes his way home.

DeleteI have a book that I have had from when I was little. The name of the book is "My Penguin Osbert". I didn't really remember it that well so I read it and I remembered all the times I read it before. It's about a kid who got a penguin for Christmas and all the penguin wants is to be in the snow but the boy wants to stay inside. I like the illustrations of the snow and how he draws it. I had 3 books but I picked this one. U used to have more books on snow but I couldn't find them. (I think my mom brought them to work for the kids) P.S. My mom is a kindergarten teacher.

ReplyDeleteHi my name is Kylee and I read the Snow Day, Poem. The reason why I picked this poem is because it looked like a decent size. It caught my attention and it was nice concept. When I read it I could see what was happening so clearly it is like I was there. The author did a great job. My favorite thing of the poem was that it is about kids playing out side on their snow day. They were not looking at the TV and playing video games all day.

The poem is a very beautiful,
well thought out poem,
a line a particularly like was
"Bright as the flow of a dream"
because when I look outside to see the snow,
I've never found the words to describe it,
but that is exactly the way it is.
Each stanza does something different with the topic,
for example; the first and second stanza describe snow,
while the third and tell what is does.
I’m actually very happy this was our topic
because I wouldn't have read the poem if otherwise.
I will read a lot more poems now and have a greater appreciation for them.

DeleteI read a story called "Cross-Country Cat". A young cat named Henry likes to walk on his hind legs. It is an amazing feat, thinks the boy, so he decides to let the cat try cross-country skiing since they are already up on the mountain for a skiing trip. Henry bitterly fails.
ReplyDeleteWhen the family packs themselves up, Henry needs to go quickly grab his mouse toy from the cabin. When he returns, the family has left him behind on accident. He must ski into the wilderness to reunite with his family and even for his very survival.

DeleteI read Stranger in the Woods by Carl R. Sams II and Jean Stoick. It was about these people who make a snowman and cover it in food each winter. The story was from the animal’s perspective and what the people think the animals would do when a snowman, or stranger, arrives in their territory. For example the wise old owl said “who is there” and the buck said “I will go first because I have antlers”. The chickadee was the first one there. The chickadee was also the one to notice the birdseed on the snowman’s hat. One of the deer discovered the carrot, while another found corn around the bottom of the snowman. There was even nuts for the squirrels to munch on. The people refill the food every day and got awesome close up photos of the animals.

DeleteI read the book BRRRR! by James Stevenson. Grampa is telling a story about when he was a kid and how it was the coldest Winter of all. Grampa and his little brother, Wainey, go outside to sled. Well, it snowed so much it reached the chimney's of all the houses and they couldn't find their way back home. Wainey got lost and started to cry. When Grampa found him, he would not stop crying. Grampa tried to cheer Wainey up by building a giant snowman. The snowman toppled over on them. The giant snowball rolled through the town with Grampa and Wainey in it and stopped in front of their house. They had one more problem. All the housed were covered in ice. Grampa got an idea. He told Wainey, "I guess you'll never have ice cream again." This made Wainey cry so loud that all the ice cracked on every house. Keith

At the bottom of the poem it has a description: "Toward the end of winter, when most of the snow has melted, Frost finds a small patch of dirty snow, perhaps shaded from the sun. ReplyDeleteI have seen that in the Robert Frost book in the library. I hate to see patches of dirty snow, so it helps me to read that comment about how it makes Frost think of the past. I guess there is always a little something in our past that won't seem to go away. I hadn't thought of that on my own.
DeleteI read Snow-White and the Seven Dwarfs and it is about A queen wanting to be the fairest of them all but as long as Snow White is alive she will be the fairest of them all. First she tried to get a huntsmen to tried to kill her in the forest but he spare her life. Next she showed up at the dwarfs house and ties Snow Whites laces too tight but dwarfs nursed her to health. Then the queen brushes her hair with a poisened comb but the dwarfs nursed her to health. Then the queen finally gets a poisoned apple and feeds it to her. Snow-Whaite finally is dead with a apple stuck in her throat. The dwarfs come back an see she is dead and makes a coffin fully out of glass. But before they bury her the kings son comes along and says I will give you anything for her. The dwarfs agree so his servants carry her to his palace. Along the way the apple comes out of her throat and she then begins to open her eyes. Right after the prince asks her to marry him. She agrees. Then the queen asks the mirror who is the fairest and the mirror says the young queen. The evil queen was invited to their wedding so when she gets there she had to dance in red hot slippers until she dropped down dead.

DeleteThe book I read was snow white and it was about how a queen wanted a child who had cheeks as red as blood hair as black as the window sill and a face as white as snow. The next year she had a baby but died in childbirth so the king got married again and married a evil queen who sent a huntsman to the wicked woods and kill snow white so he brought her there but let her go because she begged him and said the real story of what the queen wanted to do so she ran and ran all the way to a little house which soon the dwarfs came back to find snow white asleep so they told her she can stay as long as she cleans their house and keeps it clean so she stayed but the queen killed her and then a prince came and brought her back to a kingdom and kissed her then she came back to life and then they married and lived happily ever after.

I read the book legend of the candy cane. it is about a man who starts a candy store in the middle of a blizzard, and everyone is wondering what he is doing. my favorite part of the book is when the store finally opens officially the sun comes out and the snow stops.

DeleteI read The Polar Express. It's about a boy who is waiting for the sound of silver bells on Santa's sleigh. Instead he sees a train pull up in front of his house. Then a man asks him if he's coming and tells him it will take him to the North Pole. The boy climbs aboard and waits. When they finally arrive he gets picked to recieve the first gift of Christmas. He aks for a silver bell bell from Santa's sleigh. Later when everyone's on the train and asking to see it he reaches in his pocket only to find a hole. The next morning he finds a small box. When he opens it he find the bell and a note from "Mr. C" His parents cannot hear the bell, but he and his sister can. Eventually his siter can't even hear it. But the boy could hear it for the rest of his life. I liked this book because it had very good description. One phrase said, "It was wrapped in an apron of steam." This was refering to the train. This book has been a book I've read since I was little and I enjoyed reading again.

Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening

You can look at this poem a few different ways (like all poetry). You can think of it as a man simply riding his horse and stopping to look at fresh falling snow before leaving to do other jobs, or you could look at it as a man moving on from one thing to another in his life before he dies. In the line, "And miles to go before I sleep", maybe sleep means to die. I'm sure there are other ways you could look at this poem too.

That's very insightful, Calvin! I guess we'll never know exactly what Frost meant by "sleep", but it's interesting that it can be looked at more than one way. Like you said, most poetry can be understood different ways. That's what makes it so interesting!
DeleteI have read the book Wolf Storm. In the book three kids starring in a movie get trapped at the movie set with no shelter, no food and three wolves, a dog and a crazy old man. Throughout the book these people work together and try to survive the blizzard their trapped in. I never finished the book because it started getting boring for me.

DeleteI didn't love that book either, but I did finish it. I wasn't convinced that the information about the avalanche was accurate; it didn't seem very realistic to me. But I've never been in an avalanche, so I don't really know! And I hope to keep it that way!
I read the book The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats. Its about a kid who is excited about the snow that is falling and runs outside to do everything you could imagine. He made snowmen/ angels, went sledding, and made a snow ball. He took it in but it melted and he was upset but more snow fell the next day.

I liked the poem The First Snow because it talks about kids going outside and playing and building snowmen, running around and it sounds like they are having lots of fun. Then they go inside and have hot chocolate, YUMMY!!!! Then going back outside again to play and I do that quite a bit. I never want to stop playing in the snow because it is so fun. So I read that poem because it talks about things I do in the winter when it snows. I recommend reading that poem.

DeleteI read a story called Snow White and Rose Red. This is a story about two girls who lives with their mother. One cold winter night a bear knocked on the door and they let him in. the girls bonded with the bear and would ever playfully hit him with a with a hazel twig. One time they him too hard and he said “Spare my life, dear children: Snow White, Rose Red, Do not beat your wooer dead." They never thought much of it. When spring came and the bear had to go, the girls asked where he was going and the bear said that he had to deal with the ugly old dwarfs. Later in the summer Snow White and Rose Red had to go into the forest to gather wood. Sure enough the girls met a dwarf in the forest. The dwarf was trying to cut down a tree and his hand slipped and got stuck in a crack. They tried to get it out but they couldn’t, Rose Red said that they should get more help and the dwarf got really mad at them. Finally Snow White got him free. Once he was free he took off with a sack of gold. The next day they saw him again but this time he wasn’t in the forest he was fishing at the pond. When the girls got there they said he was too close to the water and he might fall in, he said that he isn’t a fool. The line got caught in the dwarfs beard so Snow White cut off a piece of his beard. He got mad and stormed off with pearls. A little later the girls went to town to buy their mom some needles and thread. In town the girls heard a scream. They ran to it and there was the dwarf. A large bird had the dwarf and was flying around. The girls grabbed his beard and tugged until the bird let him go. On the way home the girls saw this big rock. The dwarf was there and he had all his jewels laid out. The girls went over to see the jewels when all of a sudden the bear came out of nowhere. The girls screamed and the dwarf said to eat them instead. The bear killed and the dwarf and then told the girls he was their friend from the summer. When the girls came over to the bear he shed his fur and he was a prince. Snow White married him and Rose Red married his brother and they all lived happily ever after.

For this months blog post, I read a book called "The Snow Bear". It's about a bear who can't find it's mother, so he started to make one out of snow. His other forest friends helped him, but soon it became late. All of his friends went back home while the bear slept by himself next to the snow bear. When he woke up, his real mother was right beside him where the snow sculpture used to be. I loved the illustrations in the book, and I'm glad the bear was finally reunited with his mother.

DeleteI listened to the song "Snow" by "Sleeping At Last" this was a song I danced to at my winter dance recital and I thought it was a beautiful song. It sounds like a poem but with more of a melody with help of all of the figurative language and stated facts in it. It is about changes that occur during fall to winter and the beauties of winter and how family comes together to celebrate holidays in winter like Christmas and New Years. It also states some traditions people may do and how even if something goes bad during that time of year people stay happy because they want it to be joyful and stay that way. In the entire song my favorite stanza is

I read Frosty the Snowman. Its about a snowman named Frosty who was created by these children. Frosty tells the children to have some fun with him before he melt away.
