One Great and Powerful Book!

The other day I went to see "The Hobbit". I had been looking forward to seeing this movie for more than a year! I remembered reading the book (more than once) and listening to an audiobook version (more than once!) and loving it. Several years ago, there was an animated movie, but it was TERRIBLE! I was hoping that with Peter Jackson as director, this one would be as great as the book.
I should have known better. Movies are NEVER as good as the book! (Harry Potter fans might disagree.) What I saw in my head was much funnier, scarier, and more exciting than what I saw on the screen. Oh, well, if seeing the movie inspires someone to read the book, I guess that is a good thing.
It's not that I don't like movies. I love many movies. One of my favorites of all time is "The Wizard of OZ". You may not believe this, but there was a time when people didn't own movies. They had to see them in the theatre or on TV. The "Wizard of Oz" was (and still may be) shown on TV every year around Halloween. I watched it every year for about 25 years and knew every word and every song by heart. I still do... don't get me started...
The movie is based on a book titled "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" by L. Frank Baum. It was written in 1900, and is the first in a series of 14 books about the land of Oz. I am ashamed to admit that I have not read a single one of these books.
SOoooooooo... I went to see "The Hobbit" last week and saw previews for "OZ - The Great and Powerful"!! Oh oh - another version of my favorite movie! How could it possibly be any good? Well, for one thing, the special effects are going to be a lot better than the ones from 1939. This one seems to be told from the Wizard's perspective, rather than from Dorothy's. That could be interesting.
I decided that it would be a good idea to read at least the first of the Oz books before this movie opens. I would like to know if the director used anything from the book that was not included in the original movie, and if the characters are anything like Mr. Baum meant them to be.
There have been many versions of the Oz stories, many parodies, and many stories based on the characters in the land of Oz. Take a look at Wikipedia and you'll see a long list!  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Oz_books

This month, I'd like you to take a trip to the land of Oz by reading at least one chapter of any of the Oz books, or another version of The Wizard of Oz, or an article about the books or L. Frank Baum. Please share something that you learned with us. Be sure to include titles, websites, and/or links to what you found.
So, have Courage, follow the yellow brick road to the library or the internet, use your Brain and Heart to write a great post by January 31st!

  1. I read the wonderful wizard of oz and it is pretty much the same as the movie in the first chapter except the house in the L. Frank Baum story is one room and the storm cellar is a trapdoor in the middle of the house that leads to a hole. But other than that there pretty much the same.

    2. Sorry, I'll try again. I read "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz." Dorothy lives in a basic one room house in Kansas with her Aunt Em, Uncle Henry, and dog Toto. One morning, Uncle Henry heard a gust of wind and told the three to go into the storm cellar for a cyclone was coming. While hiding in the cellar, Dorothy was terrified something would happen to her. After waiting and hearing the gusts of wind so long, she fell asleep.

      Anyone care to answer this?

  5. I read the first chapter of "The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz" I think that the movie was better beacause of the storm cellar being outside was better than having it as a trapdoor in the middle of the house.

    1. I'd bet that having the storm cellar under the house was probably more accurate, but wouldn't look as good in the movie. Remember that Dorothy couldn't get into it and went back into the house? What happened to the people in the cellar (in the book) when the cyclone picked up the house?

  6. I read Chapter XI in "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" by L. Frank Baum. This is the point where Dorothy and her "new" friends make it to The Emerald City. They see that everything was green, even the sky! Not ever reading the books but seeing the play 1,000 times, I always thought that the slippers were ruby red in the books, as well as the play and the movie. Turns out, in the books they're silver. Who knew, right. Unlike the play and the movie, they four friends had to go in alone, one per day. However, they were all told to do the same thing. Another different thing, the friends all saw Oz as a different thing. First the huge head we all know about, and then a beautiful lady, next was a hairy monster, finally was huge ball of fire.

  7. I read the XI chapter of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. I love Toto! He is adorable. Does anybody know what type of dog he is? (I hate to say it but i have never seen the movie which is surprising because my aunt LOVES those kinds of movies.) When I read this chapter it was very good and weird so I think I might want to see the movie! The weirdest part of this chapter was that the main color was GREEN! (thats my favorite color) When I say the main color is green I mean green. Green hair, green eyes, the sun rays were green, the doormats were green even green people!

  10. I read chapter VI in The Wizard of Oz. I read the part where they met the cowardly lion. It was kind of weird since I did'nt really know what was going on but I got the concept of it. They were walking down the road when they heard a huge roar and a lion came out of the forest. With one swipe of his paw he knocked the scare crow out of the road. Then the tinman was on the side of the road and then Toto was charging at the lion and the lion opened it's mouth and Dorothy only had to hit the lion's nose and the lion closed his mouth. Then Dorothy had to talk to lion about how much of a coward he is and the lion knows he is a coward. At the end of the conversation the lion asks if he can go to the wizard of Oz so he can get courage so he can be happy again.

  12. I read the first chapter of The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz. It was first just describing Dorothy's life, how she lives in Kansas with he aunt and uncle in a a house with only one room. She has a dog named Toto (who has been my favorite character since i saw the movie!) she talked a lot about Toto, how he wasn't very fond of there home, he walked in circles. She also spoke of how if you looked outside all she could see is prairie, and it kind of hinted a little boredom. I want to read this book now, I'm kind of pulled in to the story...

  13. I read chapter 11 of the book version from L. Frank Baum, on literature.org. Wow! It is very different from the old movie. It is about the emerald city. You find out that dorothy and the others see the wizard alone. The wizard appears differently to each of them. He is a giant head to dorothy, a green lady to scarecrow, a beast for tin man, and a ball of fire to lion. There are no ruby slippers. They are silver. No munchkins, the little people are called winkies. No horse of a different color. There are no animals in Oz. Everything is green and decorated in emeralds still. Maggie is right, it does draw you in and I think I might read the whole book.

Dorothy was supposed to be much younger than the actress who played her (Judy Garland) so maybe that's why we think she was older. Most people think that the first chapters are simiar to the movie, but later on there are many differences. Have you read any more?

This chapter [The Cyclone] was about a small hole dug in the ground called a "Cyclone Cellar". This cellar was for when the whirlwinds arose they wouldnt die or get hurt, because the whirlwinds blow down houses.

  18. I read the chapter the cowardly lion. I chose to read this chapter because he (the lion) is my favorite character. In the story it said that the lion is scared of things that he scares away which I think is pretty funny. The best part I think is when Toto charges at the lion and scares the lion. When it should be the other way around. If I needed to pick the best chapter out of all the ones I've read this one would be my favorite.

  20. I read the first chapter of the "Wonderful Wizard of Oz" by L. Frank Baum. In this chapter, Dorothy, Toto, and her Uncle are watching the sky, and Dorothy's Uncle says that there's a cyclone coming. He goes to check on the animals and get ready. Dorothy's Aunt screams at Dorothy to get into the cellar. After that, the house is swept up off the cellar and is in the eye of the cyclone. Now it's just Dorothy and Toto together in the house with no one else. After about an hour, she decides to go to sleep. That is chapter one of the book. It's about the same as the movie except the book doesn't have Dorothy pedaling wildly on her bicycle with the dog to get home to the farm, and I wonder if the rest of the book will be like the movie, too.

When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he's hit the jackpot-fame and fortune are his for the taking-that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone's been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity-and even a bit of wizardry-Oscar transforms himself not only into the great wizard but into a better man as well. When small-time magician Oscar Diggs (James Franco) pulls one flimflam too many, he finds himself hurled into the fantastical Land of Oz where he must somehow transform himself into the great wizard-and just maybe into a better man as well. -- (C) Walt Disney

  39. I read chapter 10 in Ozma of Oz. It's called "The Giant with the Hammer". It is nowhere near the same as the original Wizard of Oz. It's about Dorothy and her army. They are traveling on the yellow brick road to see the great Oz. But the wicked witch of the west sends a Giant with a hammer to block their path. Every few seconds the giant would lift his hammer in the air and slam it down. Dorothy and her army would wait til the giant lifted his hammer, and then run under it before he smashed it back down. First of all, there is no giant hammer dude in the real story, and there is no army. Dorothy travels only with the lion, tin man, and the scarecrow. Also, there is no Toto in the story. She finds a yellow hen in the beginning, and brings it along the way. I like the original story better. This one is more scary and gruesome.

    1. Wait a minute, Paige, this IS one of the "real" Oz stories. Baum wrote 14 of them, and only one got made into a movie. The book that the movie was based on is the first in the series, titled, "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz". The one you're talking about DOES sound pretty scary! I might like it!

  41. I started out with the intent to read just Chapter 1 of "The Wizard of Oz". I got so hooked just from the first chapter, that I read the whole book in 3 days (My mom downloaded the book onto our computer from www.books.google.com/books).
In the movie, the Lion, the Tinman and the Scarecrow protected Dorothy from being killed by the Wicked Witch of the West and also help her to kill the witch in the end. In the book, Dorothy saves herself. Her friends can't save her. In Chapter 12, when they are searching for the Witch, the Tin Woodman was taken by the Winged Monkeys and dropped from very high up into an area covered with sharp, jagged rocks. He was hurt very badly and couldn't move. The Winged Monkeys then pulled out all of the straw of the Scarecrow so he also couldn't move. The Lion was kidnapped (with Dorothy)where he was to be used as a slave in the witches castle. So Dorothy is alone and has to figure out how to save herself and does by pouring a bucket of water on the Wicked Witch, just like in the movie.
I really liked this book and am looking forward to reading more of the series.

  43. I read "The Wizard of Oz", one of the older ones, in third grade. I thought it was a great book and really easy to understand, but it had a lot of differences from the movie. For example, there was still about a quarter of the book left after they killed Wicked Witch of the West, telling what happened to the Lion and the Scarecrow and the Tin Man. The plot was still about the same though. If you only read a chapter from this book then I would definetly suggest reading the rest.

  45. I read chapter 11 ot the Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum. and you would not beleive how many differences there was. For one thing the famous ruby red slippers anr actually a grayish silvery color, and the little munchkins are now winkeys. and there are no flying monkeys or any animals in this version of the Wizard of Oz.But the next fact is what i found to be the most interesting:the wizard appears different to all of the charecters. To dorathy it is a giant head but to the lion it is a gret ball of fire.I really like this book and plan on reading more.

  47. I read chapter 1 in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by Lyman Frank Baum. In the beginning of the chapter it explains where she lives and who she lives with. (Uncle Henry and Aunt Em.) Then Uncle Henry sees the long grass blowing in the wind and realizes, its a cyclone. Unfortunately, Toto (the dog) hides under her bed a Dorothy goes inside side to get him. Once she grabs Toto, the house is already in the air. Hours passed and Dorothy decides to fall asleep.

  48. I read all the way to chapter 2 and loved it. In the beginning Dorothy tells how she lives. She tells how gray everything is and how when she was younger Aunt Em would go crazy because of how happy she was. Everything was gray, the grass, the house, the sky, the clouds, everything. Then one day her Uncle Henry realizes a cyclone is coming and they need to go to the basement and hide. Dorothy looks around for her beloved dog Toto and he is hidden under the bed. She runs to him and grabs him as Aunt Em panics! The hide in the basement then all of a sudden the house lifts off the ground and Dorothy falls back. Then they come out of the basement and she lays on her bed and decides to take nap. Wether it was in her dreams or not she ended up in the LAnd of Munchkins. They all thank her for killing the wicked with of the west. She has never killed anything and is very confused. They tell her than when her house lifted up the wicked which was underneath and when it came down it killed her! Then she meets the Which of the north (I don't really remember which one it was) and she it told the horrible things that the Wicked Witch of the West has done.

They want to find the Wizard so he can give Lion courage, Tin Woodman fuel, Scare Crow a brain, and Dorety a way home. Dorety and her friends are told to follow a yellow brick road and it will lead them to the Wizard. After a londg time on there path they, like almost every book or movie, run into a problem. The Wicked Witch of the West. The witch sends out flying monkeys to attack the all four of the characters. After that mess dorety and her friend find them selves at the Emrald City. There they found the Wizard and got what they whised for. Lastly Dorehty said good by kicked her feet together and poof she was home.

One day a huge cyclone hits their house and wile she is trying to save her dog she and her dog get trapped in the cyclone. She is in the middle of the cyclone so it is not as windy as it would be if she were to be in the outer part. After she has been in there for a while her fear subsides and builds up the courage to look outside. When she walks over to the open trap door her dog follows her. Here dog loses his grip and falls through but the air keeps him from falling. She lifts him back into the house, goes over to her bead, and falls asleep.

  58. I read the 1st chapter of the Wizared of Oz. The differences between the first part of the movie and the book was that there was WAY more description in the book. The book said that Dorthy was adopted. In the movie Dorthy seemed like she was 16 or maybe 17, but in the book she seemed like she was 8-10 yeers-old. Also in the the book they said that when the house was in the twister it took hours for the house to come back down to Oz; so long that Dorthy fell alsleep, but in the movie it only took a few minutes for the house to land. In the book the good witch of the north doesn't come flying in on a bright pink bubble :( also the shoes are silver not ruby-red. In the book the witch takes a long time to figure out that Dorthy should take the yellow brick road to Kansas. But in all I think that I like the book a little bit better.

First of all, in the book, Dorothy, Toto, Aunt Em, and Uncle Henry lived in a one-room house, but in the movie they aren't. The cellar is also a trapdoor in the middle of the house, and if my memory serves me right, that's not what it was in the movie. 85. I read chapter 15 in the book The Wizard of Oz. The chapter name was The Discovery of Oz, the Terrible. I decided to read this particular chapter because I was going through the chapters online, and when I came across this one I wanted to find out what happens when they meet Oz. I started reading and found out that they found out Oz was just a humbug. But Oz said he could still grant them all their wishes. First he started with the scarecrow. He told the scarecrow he didn't need a brain that he was learning something everyday. But he still agreed to stuff his head with brains the next day. Then he moved on to the lion. He told the lion all he needed was confidence in himself, but still agreed to give him courage the next day. After the lion he moved on to the tin man. He said he was wrong to want a heart and that it made most people unhappy, but like the last two he agreed to have a heart placed in him the next day. Then there was Dorthy. He said to give him two or three days and he will try to figure out a way to get her to Kansas. I really liked the chapter and moved on to chapter 16 the Magic Art of the Great Humbug. He ended up giving everyone there wishes but Dorthy. I ended up reading the 17th, 18th, and 19th, chapter but don't want to give it away.

    1. So, it sounds like Oz wasn't Terrible after all! What does "humbug" mean? Did the book explain it?
I'm guessing that the last chapters told how he got Dorothy home. Thanks for not spoiling it!

    2. The meaning of humbug is deceptive or false talk or behavior. Which is exactly what the Wizard of Oz did. He made everyone think he was some Greta wizard that could do any thing, but his real story is very different. In the book he also does lots of things that are false and tricks people. Like how he told the tin man he would give him a heart and the tin man may have not known it but the heart was really just made of silk and sewn together. So Oz really is just a humbug.

They were getting on the lions back trying to get over a ditch to finish their quest to the wizards castle and they made it over. Next was the flowers it was my favorite part they made her pass out there was a lot of details in that part of the book. that was the chapter I read.
